MdeAS work is underway at Columbia University Medical Center. The new design of the Alumni Auditorium building, currently used by students as a large lecture hall, introduces a new space that will not only better serve the students, but will create a gateway and destination for campus visitors, as well as a formal space for guest lectures, panels, and other high-profile events.
The proposed lobby features a distinctive wood wall contouring the underbelly of the auditorium mezzanine, creating a subtle sense of connection between the lobby and auditorium. Meanwhile, the curved wall adds a sculptural element to the lobby, providing a powerful focal point that seamlessly integrates with the rest of the design.
MdeAS' design opens up the space with a reconfigured floor plan and a glass curtain wall that establishes a dramatic street presence and reveals a fully modern interior with a double-height lobby. The new facade also transforms the lobby interior, flooding the space with natural light and creates a welcoming atmosphere.
Phase I is scheduled to be completed in Spring 2018.
